Senator Danjuma Goje has proposed a controversial approach to addressing Nigeria’s persistent power supply challenges, suggesting that the country should consider outsourcing its electricity infrastructure management to a major foreign power.

Speaking during a Senate discussion, he argued that Nigeria should prioritise results over pride and engage an advanced country specifically mentioning China due to its lower labour costs to handle the sector on a long-term basis.

In his word; “Best thing to do, in my opinion and in the opinion of some others, is to swallow our pride, call on one of the major successful advanced countries, preferably China, because their cost of labour is low, give them this project of power in Nigeria, run it for 20 years, give us stable power, and move out.”

He further explained that such an arrangement, in his view, would amount to structured financing rather than traditional debt, and could lead to long-term national development.

“And within the means of this 20 years we will have stable power which is real development and all other areas will work perfectly and we will get it right”
