#EkitiDecides2026: Journalists Attacked by Suspected Hoodlums in Iyin-Ekiti
Two journalists were attacked by suspected hoodlums in Iyin-Ekiti during Saturday’s governorship election.
Yinusa Ishola of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Razak Ibrahim of The Nation were attacked at Polling Unit 10, Ward B, after EFCC operatives arrived to monitor vote buying.
The suspected hoodlums, angered by the EFCC presence, turned on the journalists. The Nation reporter was recording the incident when he was accosted.
Both journalists sustained minor injuries while escaping and lost items. The driver of their vehicle sped off to save them from further harm.
The attack highlights the dangers journalists face while covering elections in Nigeria.
The EFCC’s presence to monitor vote buying triggered hostility from hoodlums.
The incident raises concerns about media safety and press freedom during elections.
Journalists are increasingly targeted for simply doing their jobs.
The situation could have been worse if not for the quick response of the driver.
The journalists are safe but shaken. Security agencies must investigate the attack to ensure journalists can work without fear.
