The Federal Government has warned that individuals involved in the creation and circulation of fake videos, manipulated audio recordings, and digitally altered political content will face prosecution under Nigeria’s cybercrime and public safety laws.

In a statement issued by the Office of Digital Engagement and Strategy at the Presidency, the government accused unnamed political actors of deliberately weaponising religion and disinformation to provoke division and discredit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 political season.

The Presidency cited recent incidents involving manipulated videos and AI-generated audio falsely attributed to the President and religious figures.

The statement warned that security agencies would identify and investigate digital actors linked to the spread of content capable of inciting unrest, public mischief, and threats to national unity.
