Amnesty Slams Abuja Protest Crackdown, Sowore Hospitalised
Ondopress.com Amnesty International has condemned what it called a “reckless attack on peaceful protesters” during a Democracy Day demonstration in Abuja, where activist and AAC 2027 presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore reportedly collapsed after security operatives fired teargas. Sowore was subsequently taken to a hospital.
The rights organisation accused Nigerian authorities of using violence to crack down on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, calling for an immediate investigation into what it described as Sowore’s “deliberate targeting.”
A prominent activist and presidential candidate being hospitalised raises serious human rights concerns.
The crackdown on a Democracy Day protest undermines the celebration of democratic freedoms.
Amnesty’s condemnation may prompt international scrutiny of Nigeria’s human rights record.
Protesters demanding action on insecurity and hardship now face increased risk of state violence.
The incident could galvanise civil society and opposition groups ahead of the 2027 elections.
Amnesty urged authorities to respect fundamental rights; the Nigerian government has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
