Lionel Messi has made history at the 2026 World Cup, but not the kind he would have wanted.

The Argentine captain has now missed three penalties in World Cup finals, the most of any player in the tournament’s history.

Messi, who scored a hat-trick earlier in the tournament in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria to draw level with Miroslav Klose as the World Cup’s top scorer of all time , saw his record attempt from the spot go awry.
