United Nations Condemns Alleged Killing Of 50 Borno Residents, Calls For Justice

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, in a statement on Sunday, said he was “deeply appalled and saddened” by the incident which took place on Friday evening.

“Civilians should never be a target,” Fall said.

Fall, on behalf of the United Nations in Nigeria, said, “I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and those affected, and to the Government and the people of Borno State, and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

According to preliminary reports, more than 50 people were killed when gunmen suspected to be members of a non-state armed group stormed Darajamal around 9:00 p.m. on 5 September.

The assault reportedly lasted through the night until daybreak. Locals said the attackers killed both residents and travelers, leaving many people missing.

The raid also saw at least 28 houses torched, while residents reported that ten buses were burnt.

Survivors recounted how families who had only recently resettled in the village earlier this year were once again thrown into tragedy.
