BREAKING NEWS: Labour Congress Call For Review Of Minimum Wage, Propose N150,000 Pay For Lagos Workers
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Chapter, has called for a minimum wage of N150,000 for workers in Lagos, following recent wage increases by the Imo and Ebonyi state governments.
The Chairperson of Lagos NLC, Funmi Sesi, made the appeal yesterday, emphasizing that the current minimum wage of N85,000 is insufficient given the high cost of living in Lagos, particularly in housing, transportation, feeding, and utilities.
“The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos,” Sesi said.
“No one can fault Governor Sanwo-Olu if he implements a higher wage, as Lagos workers deserve better pay and decent working conditions that reflect the state’s economic realities.” She added that NLC anticipates other states will follow the example set by Imo and Ebonyi.
In Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma recently raised the minimum wage for civil servants from N76,000 to N104,000, while Ebonyi State increased its civil servants’ minimum wage from N70,000 to N90,000, according to the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe.
Sesi commended these decisions as positive developments for Nigerian workers and reiterated that Lagos employees should not have to wait to secure improved welfare and compensation packages aligned with their living costs.
