A chilling story of forgiveness turned tragic has emerged from Horseshoe Lake, Arkansas, where a woman was brutally murdered by the same man she once helped secure parole after he killed her mother decades earlier.

In 1996, 16-year-old Travis Lewis murdered 75-year-old Sally Snowden McKay and her nephew, Joseph “Lee” Baker, inside the historic Snowden House. Convicted of the double homicide, he was sentenced to 28½ years in prison.

Sally’s daughter, Martha McKay, a devout Buddhist, chose forgiveness over vengeance. She regularly visited Lewis in prison, maintained contact, and supported his parole bid. After serving 23 years, Lewis was released in 2018.

In a remarkable act of grace, Martha gave him employment and accommodation at the Snowden House, which she had restored into a bed and breakfast. Her goal was to turn the site of tragedy into one of peace.

But in March 2020, events took a devastating turn. After Martha reportedly fired Lewis for stealing $10,000, he broke into the property and fatally attacked her in her bedroom.

When police arrived, Lewis fled the scene but drowned in Horseshoe Lake during the pursuit.

The case stands as a haunting reminder of the delicate balance between mercy and caution, and the dangers that can follow when trust is betrayed.
