Hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) face shutdown as resident doctors have embarked on an indefinite strike over unmet demands by the authorities.
The Association of Resident Doctors, FCT chapter, announced the decision after an emergency general meeting held on Sunday.
Its president, Dr. George Ebong, in a press conference on Monday, confirmed that the strike action would continue until the government demonstrates genuine commitment to addressing their concerns.
According to Ebong, the issues include the non-payment of 26 doctors despite seven months of dialogue, unresolved matters of unemployment affecting service delivery, unexplained salary deductions, delayed promotions since 2023, and poor hospital facilities such as the absence of functional X-ray machines.
“The government is to meet any of our demands financially and non-financially.
“The Government of FCTA has refused to listen; the Congress has mandated that until they listen, we will go on strike starting from this morning, Monday, September 15th, 2025.
“This is not targeted against the minister or mandate secretary, but against a failed health system.
“We call on the Minister of FCT to do the needful.
“The Congress voted for an indefinite strike until our demands are met.
“Non-payment of 26 of our members after a long dialogue of seven months.
“The issue of unemployment has continued to affect the service to our patients. Unexplained deduction of salary and promotion since 2023.
“Some of the hospitals do not have X-rays. Hospitals are not favourable for working.”
The latest action comes just hours after the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) suspended its nationwide warning strike. NARD had downed tools on September 12 but agreed to resume work after the Federal Government began addressing some of its demands, including partial payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).
