The Abia State Government has reintroduced sanitary inspection services across its 17 Local Government Areas, with officials inspecting about 4,500 premises in 85 communities in August alone as part of efforts to make Abia State the cleanest state in Nigeria.

The move is part of Governor Alex Otti’s “Keep Abia Clean Initiative”, aimed at enhancing environmental sanitation and cleanliness in the state.

This was announced on Monday by the commissioner for information, Prince Okey Kanu, after the weekly executive meeting at the Governor’s residence.

Prince Okey Kanu said the reintroduction of sanitary inspections aligns with Governor Otti’s vision for Abia’s cleanliness.

He warned sanitary inspectors against extorting citizens, stressing they should only enforce established environmental default fines.

“They should not use their positions or offices as an avenue to extort money from the citizens,” he emphasized.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philemon Ogbonna said, achieving a clean Abia requires community participation.

“The government cannot do it alone. Every community, village head, and traditional ruler should be part of this campaign,” he urged, noting the goal is environmental cleanliness, not revenue generation.

Abia State will join the World Cleanup Day on September 25, 2025, with ASEPA collaborating with stakeholders and partners for the event.

Special Adviser to the Governor on media and publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma reinforced that inspectors’ services shouldn’t be for extortion.

“This does not serve as an avenue for extortion of innocent citizens… It is for the good of everyone,” he said.

The Abia State Executive Council has approved a statewide tree planting campaign for environmental benefits including improving climate conditions and reducing erosion and flooding.

The Government is also working to keep drains clear in Aba and Umuahia amid Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) flood warnings.

The briefing was also attended by Chairman Civil Service Commission Pastor Eno Jerry-Eze and State Information Director Lady Chika Orji-Nwoke.
