BREAKING NEWS: DSS Drags Social Media Giants to Court Over Sowore Posts
The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly filed a five-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against major social media platforms, X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (owners of Facebook), over posts made by rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore.
According to the charge sheet, Sowore allegedly used his verified X account and Facebook page on August 25 and 26, 2025, to publish comments describing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal” and accusing him of dishonesty in matters relating to corruption during an official visit to Brazil.
The DSS said the remarks not only undermined the office of the president but also violated provisions guiding online platforms in Nigeria.
The case, which is expected to come up for hearing soon, is seen as a test of the federal government’s resolve to regulate social media activities in the country, even as critics warn of potential implications for free speech and democratic engagement.
