‘I Became Penniless After Piracy Ruined My ₦25m Movie Investment’ — Saheed Balogun

Veteran Nollywood actor, Saheed Balogun, has shared an emotional story about how he once lost nearly everything after investing ₦25 million in a movie that was later pirated.

Balogun made the revelation while reflecting on the impact of his mother in his life in a message marking Mother’s Day.

According to the actor, his life had previously been threatened by a serious accident that left him bedridden for three months, with many people doubting he would survive.

“I almost died after the accident. Nobody thought I was going to survive, and I was bedridden for three months,” he said.

The Nollywood star recalled that years later he faced another life-changing challenge when he invested ₦25 million into a film project that was heavily pirated, leaving him with only ₦800,000 in returns.

“For the first time in my life, even though I was already a celebrity, I became penniless and homeless,” Balogun said.

He explained that at the height of the crisis, his mother asked him to return to Nigeria and visit her at Lagos Island.

According to him, when he arrived, she showed him pirated copies of the movie and reminded him of the strength he had shown when he survived the earlier accident.

“Do you remember when you had that accident and you were almost lifeless? Nobody believed you would survive, but I stayed with you and took care of you until you got better,” she told him.

Balogun said his mother encouraged him not to lose hope, assuring him that if he could overcome the accident, he would also overcome the financial setback.
“If you could survive that, you will survive this too,” she added.
