BREAKING NEWS: FG Suspends Establishment of New Tertiary Institutions for 7 Years
The Federal Government has placed a seven-year ban on establishing new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Approved at the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu, the move aims to curb underutilised institutions, overstretched resources, and declining standards.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said the challenge is no longer access but duplication, poor infrastructure, inadequate staffing, and dwindling enrolment.
He warned that unchecked proliferation risks producing ill-prepared graduates and devaluing Nigerian degrees.
The suspension will allow government to focus on upgrading facilities, recruiting qualified staff, and strengthening existing institutions.
