The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and criminal prosecution of officers linked to the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, police said the decision followed disciplinary proceedings into the April 26, 2026 incident that led to the d+ath of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.

All officers involved were removed from the Delta State Command and redeployed to Force Headquarters in Abuja for accelerated disciplinary procedures.

According to the Force Disciplinary Committee, the principal officer violated operational guidelines. “Findings established unequivocally that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms. His actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law,” the statement read.

The committee recommended dismissal of Usman and other culpable officers, which the IGP approved and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.

Police said that after administrative processes, the officers will be handed over for prosecution.

Reaffirming its stance, the Force stated, “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law,” warning that erring officers will face consequences.

It also assured transparency, stating that “the Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served,” and extended condolences to the deceased’s family.

The incident followed a viral video showing Ogidi being shot during a police operation. Authorities had earlier claimed he was arrested over a suspected firearm, but the officer discharged his weapon against procedure, further raising concerns about police conduct.
