The Western Region attained self-government on August 8, 1957, following sustained political agitation led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the Action Group.

The region covered much of present-day Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Lagos, Edo and parts of Delta.

Under Awolowo’s leadership, the region recorded landmark developments, including free primary education, Africa’s first television station, agricultural development, industrialisation and Cocoa House in Ibadan.

The era remains one of the defining chapters in the political, economic and developmental history of Yorubaland.
