BREAKING: Fiji Faces A Health Emergency As HIV Cases Rise

Fiji has declared a national HIV emergency after the country recorded a sharp rise in infections, with about one in every 60 adults now estimated to be living with HIV, compared with one in 167 five years ago.

The country recorded 2,016 new diagnoses in 2025, while health officials say injecting drug use has become a major part of the problem, alongside sexual transmission.

The situation is serious enough that the government says an ordinary outbreak response is no longer enough.

The numbers become even harder to ignore when you look at pregnant women and children, with about one in 50 pregnant women estimated to have HIV and 59 babies born with HIV in 2025.

Fiji is now expanding free testing, treatment, prevention medicines and harm reduction services, including plans for needle and syringe programmes. The government is also trying to tackle the stigma that keeps people away from testing and care.

Basically, Fiji has reached the point where pretending the problem will quietly disappear is no longer an option.
