Police in Karonga have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the death of a 20-year-old man who was allegedly beaten after being suspected of stealing cattle.

The suspect, identified as Thomson Mwanyongo, is accused of being involved in the death of Robert Mwenitete, who was allegedly caught with Mwanyongo’s cattle on the night of 13 September 2026 at Mweneyumba Village in Karonga.

According to Karonga Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Margret Msiska, Mwanyongo raised an alarm after Mwenitete was allegedly found with the cattle, prompting nearby residents to gather at the scene.

Msiska said the residents allegedly assaulted Mwenetite before he was taken to Karonga District Hospital for treatment.

He was later arrested by police but was released on bail after receiving medical attention.

However, his condition reportedly deteriorated and he was subsequently admitted to hospital, where he died on Thursday.

Medical examinations indicated that Mwenitete had sustained internal injuries.

Police have since arrested Mwanyongo as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mwenitete’s death continue.
