BREAKING: Inadequate Gas Supply And Reduced Water Levels – Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) Explains Nationwide Decline In Electricity Supply
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has attributed the recent decline in electricity supply across the country to inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants and reduced water levels at hydroelectric stations.
In a statement released on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the operator explained that the shortage of gas had prevented some thermal power plants from generating electricity at their available capacity, while reduced water inflows into reservoirs had affected output from hydroelectric stations.
According to NISO, the combined challenges have reduced the amount of electricity available for distribution to consumers, forcing electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to cut supply and increase load shedding, resulting in fewer hours of power for households and businesses.
“The limited availability of gas has constrained the capacity of affected thermal generating stations to operate at their available levels, while reduced water inflows into reservoirs have impacted the generation capacity of hydroelectric power stations,” the statement read.
The operator noted that the impact differs across distribution networks, depending on the volume of electricity available and the allocations received by individual DisCos.
NISO acknowledged the hardship caused by the development, assuring Nigerians that it was working to maintain grid stability and maximise the available electricity supply despite the prevailing challenges.
It also reiterated its commitment to diversifying the country’s energy sources to improve electricity security and reduce dependence on existing generation sources.
