Yoruba Broadcasters Urge Lagos Assembly to Mandate Yoruba Programmes on Broadcast Stations

The Yoruba Broadcasters Association has called on the Lagos State House of Assembly to enact legislation requiring broadcast stations operating in the state to dedicate regular airtime to Yoruba-language programming.

The association said the proposed legislation would help preserve the Yoruba language, culture and identity, while ensuring that the indigenous language remains prominent in the state’s media space.

The group made the appeal as part of efforts to promote the continued use of Yoruba across different sectors of society, particularly the broadcast industry, where it said regular programming could play an important role in preserving the language for younger generations.

The association also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant at least one major national interview in Yoruba.

According to the group, such an interview would demonstrate the importance of indigenous languages at the highest level of government and further increase the visibility and use of Yoruba among Nigerians.

The association maintained that greater representation of Yoruba in mainstream broadcasting and national discourse would contribute to the preservation of the language and cultural heritage.

The call comes amid growing discussions about the need to promote Nigeria’s indigenous languages and prevent the erosion of cultural identity among younger generations.
