Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom. He made the announcement in a statement outside 10 Downing Street.

Starmer said every decision he made in office had been about “putting the country I love first.”

He thanked his ” wife, Vic”, calling her a “rock”, and said he wants to be the “best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy”.

The Prime Minister spoke to the King by phone this morning to inform him of his resignation. The King was at Highgrove, his estate in Gloucestershire.

Starmer said he will do everything he can to ensure an orderly handover of power and will give his successor his full support. “They know,” he said, “that they are inheriting a Britain that is stronger and fairer than two years ago.”

He also thanked his friends and colleagues who have been by his side for six years, as well as the No10 staff and the “extraordinary civil service”.

Andy Burnham, considered the frontrunner to replace Starmer, will be in Westminster today to be sworn in as MP for Makerfield after winning the bye-election last week.
