JUST-IN: Four Suspects Dead After British Woman Is Rescued in Malawi

A police operation in Blantyre, Malawi, ended with four suspected kidnappers dead and a senior police officer injured, but the main breakthrough was the rescue of a British national who had been missing for days.

Deputy Inspector General Noel Kayira was shot during the exchange of fire and is now receiving treatment at a private hospital, while police said the suspects were armed with an AK47 and a Girsan pistol.

The four men were also taken to hospital after being shot, but later died while receiving treatment. The rescued woman, 47 year old Nasrat Osman, was kidnapped by four unidentified men in Mount Pleasant last week.

Osman was also taken to hospital after her rescue, where she is receiving treatment and undergoing physical and mental health assessments.

Police have not yet identified the four suspects, and investigations are still underway to establish exactly what happened before and during the operation. For now, one family has their missing relative back, a senior police officer is recovering from gunshot wounds, and four suspected kidnappers are dead.

It was clearly not the quiet rescue operation anyone would have planned, but at least the woman who went missing is no longer missing.
