BREAKING: Approved Military Salary Increase Takes Effect as Personnel Receive Higher Pay
The Federal Government has commenced payment of the salary increase approved by President Bola Tinubu for Nigerian military personnel, with adjustments ranging from 30 per cent to 80 per cent, depending on rank.
The new salary structure took effect on September 1 and is expected to benefit about 250,000 military personnel across the country.
According to presidential aide Dada Olusegun, the increase is intended to improve the welfare and morale of military personnel as they continue operations against insecurity.
The adjustment will raise the government’s annual military salary bill from approximately ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing a significant increase in personnel expenditure.
The salary review comes amid ongoing military operations against banditry, insurgency and other security threats across various parts of Nigeria.
Impact on Military Welfare
The government has presented the salary increase as part of efforts to improve the welfare of troops and strengthen their motivation while serving in challenging security environments.
For military personnel and their families, the higher salaries are expected to provide increased financial support.
However, the expanded wage bill also adds to government expenditure at a time when Nigeria is managing significant fiscal pressures.
The broader impact of the salary increase will depend partly on whether improved personnel welfare translates into stronger operational effectiveness and sustained security improvements.
