The Senate is preparing for what could become one of the most significant constitutional votes in Nigeria’s recent history.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged lawmakers to attend Wednesday’s plenary, where they are expected to debate and vote on the proposed State Police Bill.

Supporters say state police could improve intelligence gathering and help communities respond faster to insecurity, kidnapping and banditry. Critics, however, have raised concerns about funding, political interference and possible abuse.

If approved, the bill would represent the biggest restructuring of Nigeria’s policing system since independence.
