Red Eyes: Simple Ways to Relieve Redness and When to See a Doctor
Red eyes are a common problem that can occur after poor sleep, prolonged screen use, allergies, exposure to dust or smoke, or dry conditions.
In many cases, the redness is temporary and improves once the underlying irritation is addressed.
However, red eyes can sometimes be a sign of an infection, injury or another eye condition.
Understanding the possible triggers can help you manage mild cases and recognise when professional care is necessary.
1. Get enough sleep
Lack of sleep can leave the eyes tired, dry and irritated, which may make them
appear red.
Maintaining a regular sleep schedule and getting adequate rest can help the eyes recover from daily strain.
2. Take regular breaks from screens
Spending long periods looking at phones, computers and televisions can contribute to eye strain and dryness.
Try the 20-20-20 approach: every 20 minutes, look at an object about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Remembering to blink regularly can also help keep the eyes moist.
3. Apply a cool compress
A clean, cool, damp cloth placed gently over closed eyes may help reduce discomfort and temporary swelling.
Avoid placing ice directly on the skin around the eyes because extreme cold can cause irritation.
4. Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water throughout the day supports normal body functions and may help reduce dryness that contributes to eye discomfort.
People who spend time in air-conditioned or very dry environments may notice that their eyes become particularly dry.
5. Avoid rubbing your eyes
Rubbing irritated or itchy eyes can make redness worse and may introduce dirt or bacteria.
Instead, try a cool compress or suitable lubricating eye drops if dryness is responsible for the discomfort.
6. Protect your eyes from irritants
Smoke, dust, wind and air pollution can irritate the eyes.
Wearing sunglasses outdoors can provide some protection from wind, dust and bright sunlight. If you work in a dusty environment, appropriate protective eyewear can also help.
7. Maintain good eye hygiene
Wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your eyes unnecessarily.
If you use eye makeup, remove it before going to bed and avoid sharing products such as mascara or eyeliner with other people.
Contact lenses should also be handled and cleaned according to the instructions provided by an eye-care professional or the manufacturer.
8. Consider lubricating eye drops
Artificial tears may provide temporary relief when redness is caused by dry or irritated eyes.
However, not every eye drop is appropriate for every cause of redness. If symptoms continue or repeatedly return, an optometrist or ophthalmologist can help determine the cause.
9. Manage allergies
Allergies can cause red, itchy and watery eyes.
Reducing exposure to known triggers such as dust, pollen or pet dander may help. If symptoms are persistent, a pharmacist or healthcare professional can advise on appropriate allergy treatment.
10. Know when to seek medical attention
Not every case of red eyes should be treated at home.
Seek prompt medical attention if redness is accompanied by significant eye pain, changes in vision, sensitivity to light, injury, severe swelling, or thick discharge.
People who wear contact lenses should also take persistent eye redness seriously because some contact-lens-related infections can become serious quickly.
Final thoughts
Mild eye redness often improves when the underlying irritation is addressed. Getting enough rest, taking screen breaks, avoiding irritants and keeping the eyes properly lubricated can help in many everyday cases.
However, persistent or painful red eyes should not simply be treated as a cosmetic problem. Getting the correct diagnosis is important because treatment depends on the underlying cause.
