Armpit Odour: Simple Ways to Reduce and Prevent Body Odour
Armpit odour is a common concern that can affect people of all ages. It may become more noticeable during hot weather, physical activity or periods of stress.
Although sweat itself is generally odourless, body odour can develop when sweat interacts with bacteria living on the skin.
Hormonal changes, certain medical conditions, diet and individual body chemistry can also influence how a person smells.
The good news is that simple hygiene and lifestyle measures can help control unpleasant armpit odour.
1. Wash your armpits regularly
Regular bathing helps remove sweat, bacteria and other substances that can contribute to body odour.
Wash the armpits thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after exercise or heavy sweating. After bathing, dry the area properly because prolonged moisture can encourage bacterial growth.
2. Use deodorant or antiperspirant
Deodorants help reduce or mask body odour, while antiperspirants reduce sweating.
If excessive sweating is contributing to the problem, an antiperspirant may be more useful. Applying it to clean, dry skin—often at night according to the product instructions—can improve its effectiveness.
3. Change sweaty clothes
Wearing clothes that have absorbed a lot of sweat can allow odour-producing bacteria to remain close to the skin.
Change shirts and other clothing after heavy sweating, and wash clothes regularly before wearing them again.
4. Choose breathable clothing
Loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics can help reduce heat and moisture around the armpits.
In hot weather, lightweight clothing may make it easier for sweat to evaporate and can improve comfort.
5. Pay attention to possible food triggers
Some foods and drinks, including garlic, onions, spicy foods and alcohol, may influence body odour in some people.
If you notice that certain foods consistently make your body odour stronger, reducing them may help.
However, diet is only one possible factor, and body odour is not necessarily a sign of poor eating habits.
6. Keep your armpit area comfortable and clean
Some people choose to trim or remove armpit hair, while others do not. Hair removal is not essential for preventing body odour, but keeping the area clean can help manage sweat and bacteria.
If you shave, use a clean razor and avoid shaving irritated or broken skin.
7. Avoid irritating home remedies
There are many claims online about using lemon juice, vinegar or baking soda to eliminate armpit odour.
These substances can irritate the skin, particularly after shaving or in people with sensitive skin. It is generally safer to use products specifically formulated for underarm care.
8. Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water supports normal body functions and helps the body regulate temperature.
Hydration alone will not eliminate body odour, but it is an important part of maintaining general health, particularly in hot weather or during physical activity.
When should you see a doctor?
Occasional body odour is normal. However, speak with a healthcare professional if the odour:
- Suddenly changes without an obvious reason
- Becomes unusually strong or persistent
- Occurs alongside excessive sweating
- Is accompanied by skin changes, pain or infection
- Continues despite good hygiene and appropriate products
Persistent excessive sweating may be associated with hyperhidrosis, while unusual body odour can occasionally be linked to an underlying medical condition.
Final thoughts
Armpit odour is a normal part of human biology and is nothing to be embarrassed about.
Regular washing, clean clothing, appropriate deodorant or antiperspirant and breathable fabrics can make a significant difference.
If persistent odour or excessive sweating continues despite these measures, professional medical advice can help identify the cause and appropriate treatment.
