Cristiano Ronaldo Explains Why His Wedding Was Kept Strictly Private
Cristiano Ronaldo has explained why he and Georgina Rodríguez chose to keep their wedding ceremony private, saying he did not want anyone to feel excluded or give room for unnecessary speculation.
The football superstar and Rodríguez recently celebrated their marriage in an intimate ceremony at their home in Cascais, Portugal, with their five children playing a central role in the occasion.
Speaking about the decision in an interview with Vogue, Ronaldo said he would have liked to invite more people but faced a difficult choice over whom to include.
According to the Portuguese star, inviting some friends and acquaintances while leaving others out could have created misunderstandings, particularly because of the intense public interest surrounding his personal life.
Ronaldo explained that he was also concerned that people could interpret the guest list in different ways or use omissions to create speculation online.
He therefore decided that keeping the ceremony extremely small was the fairest option.
The approach meant that nobody had to question why they had been invited while someone else had not.
Ronaldo Wanted to Avoid Unnecessary Speculation
Ronaldo’s decision reflects the level of attention that surrounds almost every major event in his personal life.
Before the wedding, rumours about possible dates, locations and celebrity guests had circulated widely online. Vogue reported that speculation had even produced a long list of possible celebrity attendees.
Rather than organising a large celebrity wedding, Ronaldo and Rodríguez chose a more personal celebration centred on their family.
Rodríguez had previously explained that she wanted an intimate ceremony with Ronaldo and their children rather than the extravagant wedding she had imagined when she was younger.
The couple eventually exchanged vows at their home, marking the occasion in a setting that was familiar to their family.
A Family-Centred Celebration
Their five children were at the heart of the ceremony, making the wedding a deeply personal family occasion.
The couple also visited the Sanctuary of Fátima after the ceremony for a private blessing.
Ronaldo and Rodríguez have been together for about a decade after meeting at a Gucci store in Madrid in 2016. They announced their engagement in 2025 before eventually getting married in August 2026.
Although the civil ceremony was deliberately private, the couple have indicated that a larger celebration with family and friends could take place in the future.
For Ronaldo, the decision appears to have been less about the size of the wedding and more about protecting the people closest to him from unnecessary comparisons, speculation and public attention.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has spent much of his career under intense global scrutiny, making privacy increasingly valuable as he enters a new chapter of his personal and professional life.
